Soccer Training - How To Teach Shooting Drills

on Wednesday, October 31, 2012

To become an efficient soccer coach, you need to learn numerous strategies during soccer training. In this section, we will talk about teaching shooting drills.

There are various ways to train the team regarding the quick shooting drills. The players can start with having the players line up along the side of the goal. Now, you should form another line and this time, it should be at the top of the box.

Soccer Drills

Instruct the players along the side of the goal to play the ball with pace to the players at the top of the box. This way, before the charging player closes them down, they will have three touches to get a shot off. Another method is to play combinations at the top of the box.

Soccer Training - How To Teach Shooting Drills

These combinations may include overlaps, give and goes, and crosses that all lead to shots. Train the players about how to hit a moving ball and make the drills game-like. You can have the team proactive by setting up a few short combinations that lead to shots.

There are many other important things as well that the coaches need to teach his team regarding the shooting drills. When the players are shooting with power, teach the players how to land on their shooting foot. This is something we call follow through.

The players must also learn to keep their knee and head over the ball. Striking the center of the ball and striking through the ball is another important thing to learn regarding the shooting drills.

The players should be taught to keep their toes pointed and their ankle locked. When got a chance, the players should strike with power or place the ball into the corners. Another important thing for the players is to keep their hips square to their target.

However, the most important thing in shooting drills is that the players should never stop shooting. They may miss the first four or five shots they take but they will certainly have the sixth or seventh shot hit the back of the net. This is something called an expert soccer training.

Soccer Drills - Great Soccer Drills For Developing Young Midfielders

In developing soccer drills for young midfielders there are a number of things that you should take into consideration. The first and most obvious, yet often overlooked is how the drills relate to the skills that you are trying to develop in your young players. The second consideration is what are the important elements of a good soccer drill, and finally what are the skills that you are trying to develop?

In deciding what drills to perform with your players there are a number of things you should take into consideration. What formation are you going to use on the field, and what strategy are you going to use? What are the respective strengths and weaknesses of your players? What skills do you need to develop and maintain in your players? I have been guilty in the past of using drills at training because another coach had told me about a good drill, or I found it on the internet, when in reality the drill did not really help develop the skills that my players required. You should only decide what drills you are going to perform at training after you have decided what skills you are trying to develop. This decision should be based on what formation you are looking to play, and the current skill levels of your players.

Soccer Drills

What makes a good soccer drill? There are a number of important elements of any soccer drill. The first of these is that it should involve each of the players as much as possible. This is measured by the number of ball touches that each player gets during the drill. The second important element is that it should be fun. Players learn better when they are involved and they are having fun. The third element that I consider is that the drill should have a large element of realism. Drills should teach players how to react in game situations, and so should mimic these game situations as much as possible. The final element is that the drill should relate to the skill that you are trying to develop.

Soccer Drills - Great Soccer Drills For Developing Young Midfielders

What key skills are you looking to develop in your midfielders? Midfielders need to have good mobility, passing skills, first touch skills, defensive skills, and be able to work in limited space. I find small sided games a great way to develop these skills. 1 vs 1, 2 vs 2, 3 vs 3, or you can use unbalanced numbers like 2 vs 3. There are many variations you can use with these games depending on the skills you are trying to develop. I sometimes use 4 vs 4 but I find that this starts to limit the number of ball touches that some players will receive. Depending on the number of players that you have on your team you may have a number of these games running at the same time.

In deciding what drills you are going to use with your young midfielders, you must first decide what skills you are looking to develop. You should then ensure that the drills you use involve all players as much as possible, are fun, and relate directly to game situations and the skills you are trying to develop. You can then use a variety of small sided games at training to help develop these skills.

Soccer Training Drills - Improve Every Part of Your Game

on Monday, October 29, 2012

What are soccer training drills to you?"

A lot of soccer players think that they will be constantly running, running, running. But there is much more to it than that. Combining the soccer fitness part of the game, with ball control skills drills, will put your team on top.

Soccer Drills

Remember that not all players will learn at the same pace. You should assess the skill level of all of your players for each skill area, and provide them with the appropriate improvement drills.

Soccer Training Drills - Improve Every Part of Your Game

Be Prepared

A soccer practice that is well-planned is created with a flow. A practice must have targeted goals, not just a random mixing of drills. So start with the basics, and work up to group tactics. The group portion will be much closer to a real game. This will help your players bridge the gap between the practice and game situation.

Areas to Cover

If you cannot perform the basics, you just cannot perform. There are a number of important areas to cover when drilling your soccer team. But it is always best to start with the basics.

Passing and receiving rolling balls. Passing and receiving balls in the air. Dribbling the ball. Shielding the ball. Tackling your opponents and recovering the ball. Heading the ball. Shooting the ball.Don't ever forget goalkeeper training drills. If your team is solid with all the above skills, but have a poor goalkeeper, it will be a long season!

The Next Level

Once your players have conquered the basics you can move on to more advanced ball control techniques. These techniques include:

Push passes and shots. Swerve passes, and shots with the inside or outside of the foot. Instep drive passes and shots. Lofted passes. Chipping the ball. Volleying the ball. Attacking as a group. Defending as a group. Attacking as a team. Defending as a team. Corner kicks. Free kicks.Further Development

As you assess the improvement in the skills of individual players you will see joy on their faces as well as on yours. But soccer is a team game. That means that there are other things to think about. Like....

What players skills will work best at which position? Who has the fitness level required? Are they really team players? What formation should we play? Who is the leader of this team? The answers to these questions will have you well on your way to creating a successful soccer team.

There are soccer training drills available to cover every aspect of the soccer game and help any soccer player improve their skills.

Soccer Drills - Juggling Secrets Revealed

Let's understand it! All soccer drills call for an all-inclusive session on juggling in order for them to achieve results. It is essential that each soccer player gets trained on this basic skill of the game. Both senior players and beginners get to benefit from this activity. Related soccer exercises involve the use of player's feet, thighs, and head to deal with the ball. As a warm-up activity, its usefulness can be gauged from the fact that only after 10 minutes of juggling, the players feel their heart rate increasing and the muscles also become warm enough.

Players get to find out the skill of controlling the ball along with the close ball skills by using juggling. They tend to develop a good judgment of control and maneuvering of the ball in the midst of an opposition attack. Lastly, they build up a lot of confidence by way of juggling that allows them to settle down with the ball (the main characteristic necessary for a successful attack). Throughout soccer practice, players get a chance to develop their special styles of juggling by practicing it separately. Some of the following tips will be useful to you as a coach.

Soccer Drills

Train the players in using the crown of their foot or the laces to juggle with their foot. The legs must be sufficiently relaxed and the foot bent when it makes contact with the ball. Instruct them to hold the arms out a little so that they can maintain balance. When using the thighs to juggle, teach them to bring the knee up so that the upper leg is horizontal. Help them identify the fact that ball needs to come into contact with the top of the thigh. It is crucial that the body is bent backwards a little and the arms pulled out straight so that balance is maintained.

Soccer Drills - Juggling Secrets Revealed

To juggle with the head is a difficult thing to accomplish for the kids. But, during the soccer drills, they must practice it at all costs. It is required of the players to review the correct angle so that the forehead is brought in contact with the ball. They should hold the head sufficiently higher so that the eyes face the sky. The legs should be twisted and get straight up every time the ball makes a contact with the ball. In addition to this soccer training, motivate the players to use their shoulders, outside of the heels, and the back of the neck as well. In certain unforeseen circumstances, it becomes vital to use these contact points. The young players should enjoy feeling the ball on their laces because this is the area that they will use the most to shoot the ball.

To conclude, it is important to highlight the factors of rhythm and balance. These are helpful in juggling the ball and therefore must be practiced. Coach the players to calm down and judge the movement of the ball. With practice, they will be able to do it and perfect the art of juggling. Now get to the field and show your players some juggling soccer drills. Our youth soccer coaching community is a treasure house of articles, tips and videos on juggling. Soccer Coaching Drills - Who Else Wants to Enjoy Training?

Have you ever thought why kids get so excited about soccer coaching drills? Kids look at these drills as an opportunity to have pleasure and not just a sport. Youth soccer drills therefore test the talent of the coach when they require kids to keenly look forward to their next session.

This can be achieved in a variety of ways. Offer them to participate in fun activities that direct their energy in building up a feeling of competition amongst them. You should know that it's a team game. For that reason it should include games that encourage unity among team members.

Soccer Drills

One of the best soccer coaching strategies to get started with kids is fun soccer conditioning. It helps you to utilize their tremendous energy as well as make them focus on the game.

Soccer Coaching Drills - Who Else Wants to Enjoy Training?

To begin with, instruct the kids to go for a short session of running or jogging that will warm up their bodies. But make sure they don't overexert themselves. Since kids are a power house of energy, they may easily get overboard without realizing their limit. Ensure a few breaks between them. It allows them to refresh and rejuvenate themselves. You can also use the breaks to discuss the subsequent drills with them.

Next, involve the players in individual or group activities. Take an example, the player who arrives first starts juggling the ball. He is then joined by players who keep coming in. In this manner, the entire group gets involved in the activity. If the group becomes large for these soccer coaching drills, make two groups and so on.

There are different activities such as soccer golf where the kids must aim and throw the ball at a distant object. Another interesting game is soccer volleyball in which the players throw the ball at each other without letting it touch the ground. These soccer coaching exercises are a great way to introduce a range of activities in a session.

Apart from it, have the players dribble the ball and also use other parts of the body but not hands. Do not be too pushy. Keep in kind that they are children and will take time to master the skills. A great way of making this exercise interesting is shouting out the name of a specific body part such as foot, knee, elbow etc when the player is ready to tackle the ball. Then the player needs to bring into play only that body part. This helps them pay attention to it.

Another part of exciting drills is circuit training. It pays a lot with large number of players. It is advisable to divide the players into smaller groups and many tasks. These activities should be carried out continually with only small intervals in between.

Test these straight away. If you are innovative, you can create new fun-filled and exciting activities every day.

Now it is up to you to pass these soccer coaching drills to the kids so that they can use them on the field in their sessions. You can gain access to tons of such useful resources, tips and techniques by enrolling to our youth soccer coaching community.

Soccer Drills - Organising Your Midfield is the Key to Winning More Soccer Games

In my years coaching young soccer players, I have found that there are two keys to being successful on the park. The first of these is the amount of possession your team enjoys and the second of these is field position. And the most important element of the team that I have found for these two factors is how strong my team is across the middle of the park. I have coached teams that have had strong defenders and a weak midfield, and no matter how strong the defenders they are usually overwhelmed by the opposition. I have also coached teams with strong attackers and a weak midfield and they have failed to score many goals because the strikers usually see very little of the ball.

The formation that you use will have a big bearing on your results. The two team formations that I have most used in youth soccer are 4-4-2 and 3-4-3. Both formations involve having four players in the middle of the park. When playing a 4-4-2 formation I like my left and right midfielders to be very mobile so that they can overlap the strikers. I have found this most successful when these two players are very fit, and they must be quick. I then like one of my central players to be creative to create opportunities going forward, and the other central midfielder I play in a holding role so they should be strong defensively.

Soccer Drills

When playing a 3-4-3 formation I like the wider midfielders to be more creative so as to create more opportunities for the three strikers. They do not need to be as mobile as for a 4-4-2 formation. Again I like to have one creative central midfielder and one that is strong defensively. This will give your midfield a good balance, create opportunities for your strikers, and ease pressure on your defenders.

Soccer Drills - Organising Your Midfield is the Key to Winning More Soccer Games

What skills do your midfielders require? This is the subject for an entire article or series of articles. There are a number of roles that need to be fulfilled by the midfielders in the team. Midfield players should be mobile. They will cover more ground than any other player on the park, and be more involved in the play. They should have great fitness and speed. Midfield players should have a great first touch to bring the ball under control quickly. Players filling a creative role should have good vision and be able to execute both long and short passes. Players filling a defensive role should be great under pressure, strong in the tackle and have the ability to distribute the ball effectively after winning it.

In terms of the drills you can use to develop the skills of your midfielders there are many. The drills that I tend to focus on most are mobility drills, first touch drills, and passing drills. All mobility drills are performed with a soccer ball. I have always constructed my training sessions around maximizing the number of ball touches for every player in the team. First touch drills should involve all parts of the body with which the player can control the ball. The key focus of all of these drills should be bringing the ball under control quickly. First touch drills and passing drills can be incorporated together. Passing drills should involve long and short passes so that players become proficient with both. Passing drills should also give players an understanding of when the ball should be passed to other players feet and when it should be played in front of them.

When constructing your midfield there are a number of important considerations. The first of these should be the formation and strategy that you are going to use on the field. You should then look at the respective abilities of each of your midfield players and how they will fit into the formation. If your players do not fit into the formation you either need to use a different formation, find some new players, or train them in the areas they need to develop to make the formation effective. How you organise and train your midfield will have a large bearing on how much possession and field position your team enjoys when game time comes around.

Coaching Flag Football

Your main goal in coaching flag football, even before winning, should be for the kids to have a safe and fun environment to play in. Let your team know that in order for them to be successful, they must work together and they must have a good attitude. Flag football is designed so that everybody is able to play so you must make sure that they work in harmony.

Coaching flag football means that you're going to set an example of good sportsmanship! Do not be a coach that marches to the middle of the field and screams at the referee. If you truly feel that an unfair call was made, calmly approach the ref to find out his reasoning. You can discuss it with him but don't take it too far, it's only one call.

Soccer Drills

Let the kids play! During practices it's essential to teach them different plays but don't get too complex; they're not there to learn in a classroom setting they are there to play flag football. The sport is mostly for younger kids and they're not going to be successful if they cannot understand what to do. Start with some simple plays and then build off of the simple plays into more complex plays. You will be pleasantly surprised about how easily they will be able to catch on to a difficult play if they are comfortable with the basics.

Coaching Flag Football

Always keep in mind that teams play how they practice! If they're scared of the ball during practice then they're going to be scared of the ball during the game. Your practices should consist largely of practice games. This conditioning includes not only flag football skills but also good attitudes. If a player shows misconduct to other players or to any of the coaches during practice, they must be disciplined. Otherwise they'll continue with their foul behavior and set a bad example for other players. If they're properly disciplined (without being too harsh) then they will see that playing time will be lost if they display that kind of attitude.

Also, do not cancel practices in strenuous conditions like snow or rain. If there is a chance of bad weather during the game then you want your team to be prepared. If it happens to be nice sunny weather on game-day, they will play with the effort that they used in practice under bad conditions. However, you don't want them to have the practice of playing under perfect conditions and then have game-day be a rain shower, they'll not be prepared. Coaching flag football gives you seniority to make decisions. It's good coaching to prepare your team for the worst but make sure that you never compromise their safety.

Teach your team to win the games and teach them to have a winning attitude. You must always remember to practice what you preach while you are coaching flag football.

Football Agility Drills

In every sport it's important for players to be somewhat agile. In football it's very important for most of the players to be very agile. For this reason football players are often required to complete football agility drills in practice.

You've probably seen football players running through tires. You also may have seen football players running over blocks and around other obstacles. These are all football agility drills that help a player improve his balance and agility.

Soccer Drills

But there are many other drills that football players can do in practice as well. These drills are effective whether they are being used for youth football agility drills or professional football agility drills.

Football Agility Drills

Part of being agile is being able to start and stop quickly. Since football is played in spurts of only a few seconds at a time, being able to explode into motion is very important.

Players can be helped with starting and stopping simply by running short sprints in practice everyday. Not only will this help them with their agility but it will also help them with their physical conditioning.

A more specific running drill that also helps with conditioning and agility are shuttle runs. Shuttle runs require a player to run a certain distance, turn and run back, and then run another longer distance. The distance keeps getting longer and each time the player must run back to the place where he began.

For example, the player has to run 10 yards, go back, run 20 yards, and then go back, then 30 yards, etc. Not only does this help improve a player's stamina and endurance but it also helps the player learn to take-off and explode into action.

Another one of the great football agility drill involves working one-on-one with a player. So it can't be done with the team as a whole during practice. For this drill all you need is a step and a weighted ball. You may want to use a football instead of a weighted ball, that's good too.

First, have the player step-up onto the step and balance himself on just one leg. Then have him slowly return back to the ground. He should do 2 sets of 20 step-ups for each leg. His movements should be slow and deliberate and his body should be under control at all times.

Once the player has mastered stepping-up, begin throwing him a weighted ball while he is standing on the step (with one leg). The player should catch the ball and then throw it back without losing his balance. This should be done in 2 sets of 20. Remember, you can also use a football for this drill instead of a weighted ball.

Having solid agility is a must for football players. That's why it's important for football players to perform football agility drills in practice. These drills should help the players improve their ability to burst into action, keep their balance, and change directions. All of these abilities are needed on the football field for just about every play.

Soccer Drills - How To Improve Soccer Passing Skills

Passing and receiving a soccer ball is more than just kicking it back and forth. These are soccer skills that involve communication, organization, and vision. There are many simple, yet effective soccer drills ou can use to easily improve passing and receiving skills.

The goal is to effectively work on passing technique and combine this with training on receiving, fitness, and movement.

Soccer Drills

Here's an example of a simple way you can do just that:

Soccer Drills - How To Improve Soccer Passing Skills

- Create a rectangle 4 yards by 10 yards with a pylon
at each corner.

- Have one player stand behind each pylon.

- The drill begins when player 1 passes to player 2 and then
player 1 switches places with player 4. Player 2 passes to
player 4 and then switches places with player 3.

- They then repeat this drill on the other side.

- Then passing takes place between players 3 and 4.

One great variation is to have two balls going at once so that while player 1 is passing to player 2, player 4 is passing to player 3, then they switch and pass the ball back and switch again.

Here's another example...

Pass and Run

This is a drill that accommodates 6 or more players. Using 12 players in the following example, note how there are 4 players set up in each corner of the field.

- The first player 1 passes to the front player 4 and then runs to the back of line 4.

- Then the first player 4 passes to the front player 1 and follows up by running to the end of the number 1 line.

- They continue in this pattern and meanwhile the same exchange is happening between lines 2 and 3.

Use your imagination and come up with other ways to vary this game and your own soccer drills.

Soccer Training Drills - Primary Skills Required For Soccer Training Drills

In soccer training drills, a player is required to know primary skills to be able to progress further on the soccer field. In order for a coach to teach the players these primary skills effectively, it is best that these skills are practiced constantly to help the players master the skills. Basic primary skills consist of ball control, dribbling, kicking and heading.

A coach must assist the player in mastering these skills, by building confidence in a player's ability during a soccer training drills session. If a player is confident, that player will be able to perform the skills to perfection. A soccer coach should help the players practice the abovementioned skills as often as possible, and this will build the necessary confidence. When a player constantly practices the skills, they will be able to familiarize these skills during a soccer match.

Soccer Drills

Soccer Training Drills - Ball Control

Soccer Training Drills - Primary Skills Required For Soccer Training Drills

There are some moves that a player can use during a training session to practice ball control, and they are the outside and inside cut, and the cut under the body move. If a player is unable to control a soccer ball, the team will not be able to put moves together to get them closer to a goal.

Soccer Training Drills - Dribbling

Training a dribbling session is great fun for players, as they will constantly have the ball at their feet. During a training session you can use the step over, nutmeg or fake kick move to help the players build their confidence in dribbling. There are various methods of dribbling moves, but these are some of the favorites.

Soccer Training Drills - Kicking

When your players are participating in a match, it is important for them to know which kick to use when the ball comes their way. Should they use a ground kick, or the volley? Balance is also a very important part of kicking, and this should be used effectively in training.

Soccer Training Drills - Heading

A player just putting their head to a soccer ball will not be effective, as the ball will go anywhere it pleases. Therefore it is important that players practice the art of controlling where they head the ball, and what part of the head to use. Player should also practice the flick on header, diving header and glancing header.

Soccer Drills - Killer Tips on Soccer Formations

Let's say you are told that there are soccer drills that integrate formations and therefore become the backbone of any training session. Training methods adopted will serve no purpose if these drills are not suitable for your players.

The style in which the players are placed on the filed is known as formation. The players can easily learn to respond to different situations on field when they are made to perform drills using the formations. Soccer training includes several formations a few of which have been discussed below.

Soccer Drills

Centering the ball: This requires the player to kick the ball from side into the middle of the field. Out of all the methods, it's the first-rate way of getting the ball into the bend of concentration. At this time, it critical that the remaining team members are in right balance with the one centering the ball. Centering the ball is done on both sides of the field and is fairly simple to do.

Soccer Drills - Killer Tips on Soccer Formations

You must ensure that soccer drills lay emphasis on all theories of offence, mid-field, defense, and support. Therefore, the player with the ball will try to move it towards the outer region to the end line. Players can be taught to use passing or dribbling to do it. Make sure your players get in close proximity to the end line.

To defend the goal, what works best is that defense splits up and forms a line absorbing the player centering the ball and the goalpost. Hence, the players in your team must make sure that maintain their formation for as long as possible and take away the ball while on defense.

Whenever the ball is centered from the end line or is very close to the end line, it is unlikely that the ball would go offside. The reason for this is that the person who takes the ball is behind the point from where the kick was shot.

Kickoff formations: Most of the teams with young players practice such soccer exercises to get to the center circle and kick the ball as hard as possible. This is their kickoff plan. There are numerous rewards of kicking the ball. Firstly, the ball reaches pretty close to the opponent's goal. Second, the team only needs to cover a less area if the ball is kicked to the right or left side.

Also, it's easy to teach them to first kick and then take off. It makes complete sense to just kick the ball but even better is the soccer practice where the players spin the ball forward to a teammate, move about the ball to the outer field, and then move along the field towards the opponent's goal.

In this manner, the team is in a better position to maneuver the ball. Make it a point to position your players in a suitable formation and run the formation as you would do in any other drill. Bear in mind that this is not a real game. You are only helping the players to learn to play in different positions.

So move ahead, execute the formation drill, end, modify, and run the drill again. Carry on with these soccer drills till the time all the players have a hang of reacting properly and maintaining their positions.

Soccer Drills - Teach Your Young Soccer Players to Shoot Like the Pros

on Sunday, October 21, 2012

What makes a great striker or centre forward? Surely it is the ability to score goals. Nobody remembers how hard a striker worked off the ball, or how they pressured the opposition defence. Everyone remembers the goals they scored, or the ones that they did not score. Traditionally as players grow towards senior ranks there will be fewer goal scoring opportunities for strikers, and so they must be able to take the ones that they get. Balance, speed, agility and power are the key characteristics that make a great young striker. The soccer drills that you use at training should develop these attributes in your young strikers.

When using shooting drills at training, the first thing I do is make clear areas in the goal in which I want them to shoot. I use hats or cones, which I usually place about 2 metres inside of each post. As players become more proficient move the hats closer to the goal posts. To start I encourage the players to shot along the ground, and as they become more proficient I encourage them to shoot into the top corners. As strikers mature I also encourage them to take into consideration the strengths and weaknesses of the opposing goalkeeper. If it is a tall keeper that is strong in the air I encourage them to shoot along the ground, or if I know the keeper is not strong in the air I encourage them to shoot at the top corners.

Soccer Drills

Power and coordination are key attributes of a good striker. I use tennis balls at training to help develop these attributes. Using a small ball encourages the players to watch the ball more closely. They will find this frustrating at first and there will be some funny moments at training, but I guarantee that a striker that can shoot well with a tennis ball will be dynamite with a soccer ball. I particularly like to use a tennis ball for first time shot drills, and volley drills as I find it most effective.

Soccer Drills - Teach Your Young Soccer Players to Shoot Like the Pros

Strikers will face many different situations in a game. It is important that you practice these at training with a variety of soccer drills. A good striker must know when to hit a shot first time and when to take a touch. A good striker will know when to have a shot themselves and when to lay the ball off to a teammate. Practice different types of shots including volleys, first time shots, lobs, shooting with their weaker foot, shooting with their head, and shooting on the turn are a few of the different situations that you can practice at training to improve the proficiency of your strikers.

The final element that I like to include at training is always an element of realism. Make them beat a defender and then take a shot. Make them beat the goalkeeper. I always watch my strikers closely to see how many times they hit the goalkeeper with their shot. If this is happening frequently you will see that they look directly at the goalkeeper when taking a shot. Encourage them to look at the spot where they want the ball to go and not to look at the goalkeeper. You will need to reinforce this many times at training if you have a striker that consistently hits the goalkeeper with their shot. If they are shooting over the bar consistently encourage them to keep their head down over the ball, and to place the ball into the net. Trying for too much power tends to make the head go up and the ball go over the bar. The other thing I watch for is how strong they are on their weaker foot. A one footed striker is much easier to defend against.

If you want your young strikers to shoot like pros your training drills must focus on the key aspects which make a good striker. These are power, speed, agility and balance. Teach them to shoot in different situations at training so they make good decisions on the field. Make sure the training drills have an element of realism. Give them targets to aim at in the goals, develop their power and coordination, and practice, practice, practice.

Soccer Drills - Teach Your Young Soccer Players to Shoot Like the Pros

Soccer Drills - Why Coaches Should Never Use Knockout Drills in Practice

Coaches that use knockout drill during their training sessions run a great risk of destroying the confidence of the weaker players on their team, and creating disharmony within the team. Knockout drills are drills where players get progressively eliminated until you are left with a winner. Your winner will most likely be the best player on your team. My experience with coaching children is that the great majority of coaches already know who the best player on the team is. So my question is do you want to find out what you already know, or do you want to improve the ability of the players in your team? If your answer is the latter, then you have no reason to use knockout drills.

My aim with any practice is to maximise the number of touches on the soccer players that all players achieve. All soccer drills should be engineered so as to achieve this goal. Without argument, there are many valuable skills that a player must learn which do not involve touching the ball, however of the major skills (trapping, passing and tackling) all require the player to be able to control the ball in an effective manner. So for this reason, I have always tried to create sessions which get players touching the ball more. If you have a weaker player on your team and you want them to improve, get them kicking the ball more. Encouraging them to kick a ball outside of practice sessions will also speed their improvement.

Soccer Drills

Another effective way to achieve the goal of increasing touches on the ball for all players is to divide your team into small groups at practice. This may mean that you have to enlist the aid of your team manager or parents to help with supervision. Having players stand in line to wait for their turn to kick the ball is not an effective means of practice. Yet it is one seen on many training paddocks. It is definitely more challenging to supervise a number of small groups, particularly if you do not have any help, but a coach can rotate amongst the groups to aid supervision. Dividing your team into groups of 3 or 4 players, rather than 1 group of 12 to 14 players will potentially increase the number of ball touches for each players by at least three times. How much more quickly will your players improve by this method?

Soccer Drills - Why Coaches Should Never Use Knockout Drills in Practice

If you want to introduce an element of competition into your practices and you have been using knockout drills for a long time this may be a little difficult to come to terms with. All players respond better to competition (except the ones on the sideline!!). Another means of getting around this problem is to use a rotation of players. Maybe you have three team of four playing four vs. four. If you want an extra element of competition have one team sit out, replacing the team that does not win, and so on. Or if you have three teams of four set up two fields and rotate the teams around the fields.

So for those coaches that have been using knockout drills in their practice I hope you have been very successful with these. I would also hope that you may experiment with using some of these techniques, and that you continue to see improvement in your players. For new coaches I would strongly encourage you not to use knockout drills, but rather to use small groups, soccer drills that maximise the number of ball touches for all children (not just the stronger ones), and rotation of small teams. Good luck with your coaching.

Soccer Drills - Why Coaches Should Never Use Knockout Drills in Practice

Soccer Drills - Two Advanced Drills to Improve Your Soccer Game

After practicing some basic drills and having an understanding of the game incorporate more advanced drills into a practice. Here are two advanced drills to help with game situations.

Power and Finesse. - This drill will stress using both feet for a power, and finesse shot. Finesse shots should be soft, accurate, and well placed. Power shots should be hard, accurate, and well placed.
Start by having a group of players form two lines outside the eighteen box. One line five feet to the left of the half circle and the other five feet right of the half circle.
Each player will be taking two shots. One at the eighteen box and one at the six box. If a player makes one of the two shots they go to the end of their line. If a player makes both shots they challenge another player from the other team, and that player must make both shot or they are out.
If a player misses both they are out of the drill. Have two passers on either side of the goal with a pile of balls. The passers make two passes per player.

Soccer Drills

Juggling - This drill will focus on soft touches resulting in better ball control. Start with a soccer ball in hand, and drop it to your feet. With both feet try to keep it from touching the ground as long as possible. In order to do accomplish this lightly kick the ball upwards. Slant your foot to the sky, and make contact with the laces of your foot. Keep the ball below the waist. Kick the ball with a light upward snap of the foot.
