Soccer Training Drills - Shooting, Dribbling, and Trapping

on Saturday, November 3, 2012

Soccer training drills are fundamental to any youth soccer program. They build strength, speed, and agility, and also make good practice and warm-up exercises. Here are a few basic drills that are will help to improve your players' skills.

Shooting Drills

Soccer Drills

Learning to aim the ball correctly is essential to passing and shooting well. Each of these soccer training drills presents a great opportunity to work on shooting:

Soccer Training Drills - Shooting, Dribbling, and Trapping

Players should always aim for the upper corners of the goal net when kicking, because these are the most difficult places for goalies to reach. To reinforce this idea, tie two ropes to the right and left corners of the goal, and let them hang straight. Instruct players to try to hit the ropes when they shoot the ball into the net. Have them practice this from several different positions around the goal. Station players on both the left and right sides of the field. Have another player dribble down the middle of the field and practice passing the ball to the stationary players. This shooting drill teaches players to aim while dribbling.
Dribbling Drills

Moving down the field quickly and efficiently requires steady control of the ball. To teach your players how to direct the ball's movement while dribbling, try some of these techniques:

Set up a line of cones (spaced three to four feet apart) down the length of the field. Instruct players to weave the ball in and out of the cones while dribbling. As they get better, time them and encourage them to pick up speed. Players who have difficulty with this drill should practice weaving in and out of the cones without the ball. Divide players into teams of three, and then have two teams compete against each other in a game of keep-away. This will give players practice with dribbling in a competitive, fast-paced setting.
Trapping Drills

Trapping movements help players to intercept and gain possession of the ball during play. These drills will teach players how to use different parts of their bodies to capture and control the ball:

Have players throw a ball into the air and then catch it with their chest and legs. They must then kick the ball into the air and catch it with their body again. The object of the game is to never let the ball hit the ground. Have a contest to see which player can keep the ball in the air the longest! Take your players to a nearby indoor gym, and have them practice trapping by throwing soccer balls against a wall. When the ball bounces back at them, they should catch it with their body and maintain control of it with their feet.

These basic soccer training drills are a great way to teach players the fundamentals of the sport. Aim for making them repetitive but fun, and you'll be sure to instill the proper playing techniques in your athletes.

Soccer Training - How To Teach Shooting Drills

on Wednesday, October 31, 2012

To become an efficient soccer coach, you need to learn numerous strategies during soccer training. In this section, we will talk about teaching shooting drills.

There are various ways to train the team regarding the quick shooting drills. The players can start with having the players line up along the side of the goal. Now, you should form another line and this time, it should be at the top of the box.

Soccer Drills

Instruct the players along the side of the goal to play the ball with pace to the players at the top of the box. This way, before the charging player closes them down, they will have three touches to get a shot off. Another method is to play combinations at the top of the box.

Soccer Training - How To Teach Shooting Drills

These combinations may include overlaps, give and goes, and crosses that all lead to shots. Train the players about how to hit a moving ball and make the drills game-like. You can have the team proactive by setting up a few short combinations that lead to shots.

There are many other important things as well that the coaches need to teach his team regarding the shooting drills. When the players are shooting with power, teach the players how to land on their shooting foot. This is something we call follow through.

The players must also learn to keep their knee and head over the ball. Striking the center of the ball and striking through the ball is another important thing to learn regarding the shooting drills.

The players should be taught to keep their toes pointed and their ankle locked. When got a chance, the players should strike with power or place the ball into the corners. Another important thing for the players is to keep their hips square to their target.

However, the most important thing in shooting drills is that the players should never stop shooting. They may miss the first four or five shots they take but they will certainly have the sixth or seventh shot hit the back of the net. This is something called an expert soccer training.

Soccer Practice Games - 5 Action Ideas to Shooting Techniques

on Wednesday, August 15, 2012

Kids enjoy being a part of soccer practice games the most when they get to score as many goals as possible. For this reason, you must look for opportunities to score goals and integrate for them. In order to create such occasions for them, many options are available that can be performed. A few examples are shooting drills, full-field scrimmages, and small sided games.

During small sided games and full field scrimmages, you're required to keep changing the promotional ways to score additional goals. You can include such games that can be played without a goalie, or restrict their moves inside the warning lines. The current goalpost can be extended or extra goals can be integrated for enhancing the chances of enhancing goal scoring.

Soccer Drills

During soccer training, players can improve goal creation by becoming a skilled shooter and developing their judgment skills. Just like with passing skills, it's better to introduce shooting techniques at an early stage but put more emphasis on them in the later stages of development.

Soccer Practice Games - 5 Action Ideas to Shooting Techniques

Carrying out soccer drills is one of the means to equip the players with requisite shooting skills. Shooting skills of the players are developed and they get better in scoring goals as a result of these drills. So it is imperative for you as a coach to develop your player's shooting skills more and more.

Throughout the soccer exercises, train your players to perfectly strike the ball while shooting it. Players can use the inside of their foot to take shots from a close range. When they use the inside of the feet, it increases the shooting accuracy. If more power is required to hit the ball, ask the players to strike the ball using the instep of the foot, with toes pointed downwards and ankle locked.

The height of the shot is solely dependent on how the non-kicking foot is positioned. So players should be taught to position the non kicking foot a little ahead of the ball to keep the shot low. Remove all distractions for example moving balls, moving shooters, or defenders to help the players focus only on striking the ball.

You can start the drill progression in soccer practice games with a stationery ball and a stationery shooter. As the shooting techniques progress, increase the challenge by putting the shooter in action before he/she hits the ball. This modification will deviate from the accuracy of the striking efforts at first, because the player's visualization must serve a double purpose.

One, it should help the shooter negotiate space in the direction of the ball and second, it should help him/her put their foot at the exact spot on the ball.

As the players gain confidence, create a game like situation where both the player and the ball are in motion. Once their shooting ability improves, serve balls at different levels and speeds.

Here you go! By introducing many opportunities for scoring goals in soccer practice games, you can make the players benefit a lot out of their sessions. For more of such tips and other soccer coaching resources, join our youth soccer coaching community.

Soccer Shooting Drills

on Thursday, August 9, 2012

Goals are the salt and pepper of soccer and they can only be scored by either shooting, or heading the ball. Heading the ball is an unnatural process, whereas kicking the ball is quite a natural "need" that humans have, deep down. How many times have you walked on the street and instinctively kicked a leaf, or some small rock, just for the heck of it?

Now, how many times have you walked on the street and started hitting your head against solid objects? I hope not a lot. So heading is a lot harder to train, because we have to fight against our own natural fear of hitting our head against an object. That's why soccer shooting drills are so much more diverse and common in training sessions. Let's take a look at the different types of shooting drills.

Soccer Drills

Soccer Shooting Drills - Static Positions

Soccer Shooting Drills

Static position soccer shooting drills refer to the player's position, not the ball (although in the case of free kicks, both the ball and the player are static). Free kicks are very helpful for your players in training their shot accuracy and usually they are used for just that, instead of being a means to get your shot power trained. You could try having all your players execute free kicks, or just select a handful that you noticed are better at this role and form them as specialists in free kicks.

The other way you can practice soccer shooting drills in a static position is by having one player in the center, receiving passes from the sides and shooting, without moving towards the ball. This simulates a match scenario that occurs quite often, with a striker or a central midfielder having to shoot the ball with a single touch from a static position, because he has no space to move around, or no time to do so.

Soccer Shooting Drills - Dynamic Positions

There's a wider array of soccer drills for shooting that can be practiced from dynamic positions, than from static ones. One of the most popular is the run-and-shoot: have your players positioned in a line at the center of the pitch and send a keeper in the goal. Now, have each player sprint with the ball at his feet up to a certain point that you decide (place a cone as a visual marker), then cannon a shot to goal from there.

If you want to practice long range shots, you'll obviously have them shooting for far away, whereas if you want more finishing accuracy, you will have your players shoot from the edge of the box, or even inside it.

A slight variation of the run and shoot soccer drill is the wall-and-shoot. Basically, you'll have the same setup, with the players at half court and a goalkeeper guarding the net of one of the goals, but you will also have a player somewhere near the penalty area, who will act as a wall passer for your incoming players. So a player will sprint with the ball, when he is close to the wall passer he initiates a one-two and shoots the ball in full-on sprint, as soon as he receives it back.

After a while, the above mentioned soccer drills for shooting tend to get repetitive, so you might want to dig up some more, or simply create variations of these. You can work around the dynamic position ones and create new drills of your own.
